Dental Implants, Phoenix AZ
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is inserted into the jaw with the purpose of replacing a missing tooth’s roots. Titanium is a material that has a unique ability to fuse with bone in a process known as “osseointegration”. Used around the body for a variety of surgical needs, titanium makes an excellent alternative to natural teeth, providing equal stability. As more and more people realize the exceptional benefits dental implants bring to their lives, they are rapidly becoming the standard response to missing teeth.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
- Last a lifetime
- Do not restrict eating
- Look exactly like natural teeth
- Preserve the jawbone
- Eliminate the embarrassments of dentures

Dental Implants Procedure
- The first step in the dental implants process is to examine and perform imaging to determine whether there is enough bone to support the implant.
- If not, then a bone grafting procedure is performed. The process involves the introduction of a grafting material into the socket, where it is left for several months to encourage the growth of new bone.
- Once the jawbone is rehabilitated, we perform dental implant surgery right here in our office. During the surgery, which takes about an hour (for a single tooth), the titanium screw is inserted into the jawbone, and covered with soft tissue. It is then left to heal for several months while osseointegration occurs.
- After the bone has fused with the titanium implant, a connecting piece (“abutment”) is attached to the implant.
- You can then visit your dentist to have your final restoration crafted and attached.
Beyond Dentures: Eliminating Bone Loss and Hassle
Bone loss is one of the most serious side effects of missing teeth. The jawbone requires regular stimulation through biting and chewing in order to maintain its size. When a tooth is lost, the bone starts to resorb almost immediately. Dentures and bridges do not offset this side effect, as they provide no stimulation to the underlying bone. In addition to that, dentures can cause social embarrassment (slipping and shifting). Dental implants, by contrast, eliminate these problems as they look and function just like natural teeth do.
Dental Implants FAQ
Do dental implants hurt?
No. The area is kept numb throughout the surgery. As the anesthesia wears off, you may have some soreness for a few days, which usually can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medications.
Can I afford dental implants?
The upfront cost of dental implants is more than that of dentures or bridges, but because they last much longer (typically for a lifetime), they are a very affordable option for most people.
I am missing most of my teeth; can implants still help?
If you are missing a lot of teeth, we offer implant-supported dentures, which provide a fully functioning row of teeth in just one day. A full denture is attached to just four dental implants for a sturdy, natural-looking, hassle-free alternative to traditional dentures.
What if I am missing a lot of bone in my upper jaw?
Zygomatic implants are a wonderful solution for upper jawbone loss. They utilize the zygomatic (cheek) bone as an anchor for dental implants.
When can I return to work after dental implants surgery?
Most patients return to work the day after surgery with no problems.
How long does the process take?
The insertion of a single dental implant takes just 30 minutes to an hour. However, the entire dental implant process, from start to finish, typically takes between 3 and 12 months.
